Helena Smart, Archivist at Liverpool Record Office

The ‘April Ashley, portrait of a lady’ touring exhibition arrived in Liverpool’s Central Library today on it’s journey around community libraries in the north west of England.

Pictured with one of the panels and the book is Archivist Helena Smart who helped start the entire exhibition process by providing invaluable assistance to our volunteers when researching April’s life in the Liverpool Record Office.

The touring exhibition will be seen by approximately 50,000 library users during it’s stay on the Record Office floor in Central Library before travelling across the city to community libraries and then out into Lancashire. This is in addition to the 200,000 Museum of Liverpool visitors who have already experienced the full exhibit on the first floor of the waterfront museum since September 2013.

The touring exhibit is designed to raise awareness and interest in April’s life story and the experiences of the Trans* people who have contributed their stories to the book. Hopefully, having seen this exhibition, even more people will read the books and visit the Museum of Liverpool.
